Creative Swedish to English Translation

About me

My name is Annie Prime, also known as A.A. Prime, or Prime Translatrix, and I am an award-winning translator of Swedish and Finland-Swedish literary fiction and non-fiction. I also write, edit, review books, and translate from Russian, Spanish and French.

Since receiving my MA in translation from University College London in 2013, I have worked continuously as a full-time literary translator.

I have worked on everything from The Moomins to brutal gangster noir to historical non-fiction, and I pride myself on my ability to adapt to different genres.

Among my published works are the award-winning books of The Red Abbey Chronicles trilogy by Maria Turtschaninoff, winner of the GLLI Translated Young Adult Book of 2020, and twice nominated for the Marsh Award for Translation, the CILIP Carnegie Medal, and the International Dublin Literary Award. My translation of Slugger by Martin Holmén was also shortlisted for the Dagger Award for crime fiction.

My background in academia has fortified me with a sound understanding of philosophical, social anthropological and theoretical texts, particularly those regarding feminist issues and linguistics. I am passionate about intersectional social justice and global issues regarding human rights, animal rights, economics and environmentalism.

As a native English speaker and trained creative writer, I am highly sensitive to metaphor, imagery, structure and voice. My preferred texts are those with a touch of magic and mystery; where the words point to an unspoken underlying truth. For this reason I especially enjoy fantasy, mythology, horror, crime, children’s and young adult fiction, sci-fi, philosophy, and esotericism. I also like a challenge and enjoy being creative with humour, wordplay and rhyme.

In conclusion, I delve where other translators fear to tread – and have a lot of fun along the way.
